  On the Road to Happiness

Why He Unplugged: Matt had a great job. The problem was, he felt a strong urge to explore: both the world around him and his own heart. "I never had the 'normal' educational & career orientented goals. In my adult life, people always ask where you went to school or what you do for a living." The problem was, Matt just didn't feel defined by his job. He hit the road to figure out what does define him.

How He Unplugged: Matt drove his motorcycle cross-country, zig-zagging from Virginia to Florida, from New Orleans to Arizona, from California to Alaska, and back across through Idaho and the northern states.

Best Experience: In addition to experiencing the joys of the open road, Matt used this time to communicate with someone he'd just met before leaving. "Kim was 'home' for me the entire 10 weeks I was on the road. We're thankful that we got to know each other the way we did, without the normal pressures of what to do or how to act in the 'normal' beginning of a relationship because we were separated by so much distance. All we had were our voices on the other end of the phone." Recently, Kim got her own motorcycle to join Matt on weekend roadtrips.

Challenges: Driving across the Alaska Highway on a motorcycle! "That first day was brutal: cold, rainy, windy, some gravel/muddy road, an almost 2 mile bridge that was nothing but steel grating. At that point I thought I was insane for attempting this trek."

Lessons Learned: "I learned alot in 10 weeks and just under 14,000 miles on my little Triumph motorcycle but I still haven't figured out what people like me are supposed to do with their lives to stay truly happy. I am 100% certain that we are not meant to spend our lives in little cubicles."
